Dan Hellyar, brother of victim Jon Hellyar, said he doesn’t believe the parole board will let Michael Bear Carson out because he hasn’t shown any remorse.
“If he had any remorse, he would make that known to us,” Hellyar said. “But he hasn’t.”
Letting Michael out would be the wrong decision, Hellyar said.
“It would be a travesty of justice,” he said. “Somebody like that should never get out.”
The killer couple participated in three press conferences in 1983. They had strange religious beliefs and a hippy lifestyle filled with drug use. Police found some evidence that they may have targeted President Ronald Reagan and Gov. Jerry Brown for assassination attempts (though not carried out).
“He has a concept that he can kill people with his mind,” Jenn Carson said of her father.
Jenn and her mother lived in hiding for five years, staying in Yorba Linda, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente.
She said her mother explained her father’s behavior like this: “Daddy was sick. He hurt a bunch of people and he’s going to jail.”
Her question: “Are those people dead?”
The answer was yes.
“We consider ourselves secondary victims,” she said. “We feel we have been terrorized.”
Jenn said she has had nightmares since she was 10 years old. She would dream about meeting the mothers of her father’s victims and trying to hug them. Or, she would dream about murders and violence.
