A Phoenix man on Tuesday denied fatally beating his ex-girlfriend with a hammer and stabbing her.
At his arraignment in Maricopa County Superior Court, Caleb Shaffery pleaded not guilty to the murder of Veronica McGarvy.
Phoenix police responded Dec. 6 to the 4400 block of West Bloomfield Road after Shaffery, 25, called emergency dispatchers and reported that he killed his ex-girlfriend, according to court documents.
Officers found the body of McGarvy, 19, with obvious signs of trauma inside the home.
According to the court documents, Shaffery told investigators he put his and McGarvy's daughter in a separate room while he lured the woman to a back room where he hit her several times with a roofing hammer and then stabbed her in the chest.
